Completed May 2021
My employer owns a gym in Brighton Victoria; Melbourne’s second lockdown provided an opportunity to renovate the building. It was my role to design, source, and help install the strip lighting that would help accommodate the rebranding of the business now aimed at a younger demographic. The gym manager agreed that accent lighting was to be installed in all training rooms to create some much-needed visual intrigue. The new lighting setup played a significant role in setting a more energetic tone which would be immediately recognised by returning and new members.

SPIN CLASS LIGHTING
As part of the reopening, the gym would now be hosting spin classes (indoor group cycling). The owners had designated a separate room aimed at hosting a fun, ‘club-like’ environment for the people on bikes. I was responsible for the ceiling lighting that would accompany a projector show; both were to play during training sessions.
I installed 6 rows of LED strip on the ceiling. Initially, I considered using individually addressable LED strip, but decided that a simple DMX solution would be more practical. I sourced all appropriate hardware including drivers, extrusion, LED strip, and DMX equipment. Each row on the ceiling was wired back to a DMX decoder, and then controller, so that the colour and brightness of each row had its own channel. I used MyDMX 3.0 as the control software. I presumed that when spaced evenly, the 6 rows would be incremental enough to simulate movement as light travelled across the room.
Working alongside an electrician, the installation was fairly seamless. Up-down arrows on a wall-mounted controller allow the Spin class supervisor to cycle through a sequence of pre-programmed lighting shows. The pulsating effect simulates a sense of motion that is otherwise lacking on stationary bikes. The movement of light, paired with shifting colour gradients, successfully created an exciting, high-energy workout environment.
