HARRIS SCARFE
SOUTH MORANG, Melbourne
LIGHTING DESIGN
COMPLETED SEPTEMBER 2021
Spotlight group, a major Australian retailer, is rolling out dozens of new Harris Scarfe stores across Australia. A tender was put forward to supply and design the permanent lighting setup for the South Morang (Melbourne) store. This was our chance to supply and design the lighting for every store planned for construction. I was briefed and tasked to produce a comprehensive lighting proposal using products from our suppliers.
Track lighting was chosen in large part due to its versatility, as is particularly the case when assembled in a grid formation. Over the evolution of the store, lighting fixtures can be relocated anywhere to adapt to changing merchandising layouts.
When selecting luminaires, I decided on a combination of panel lights and spotlights. Panel lights would provide the general ambient lighting, and spotlights would be used for display highlights and to eliminate tricky dark patches between tall shelving.
Importantly, our client had emphasised a ‘modernised’ aesthetic that would be distinguishable from older stores. Cheaper lighting alternative such as high bays would have provided an underwhelming appearance so we were confident that our track lighting would deliver the desired esthetic.
After finalising optimal luminaire quantities and positioning, I produced installation plans to assist the electricians.

My lighting proposal displayed a work plane that was uniformly lit, and that met the specified average lux. I ensured there was capacity for additional spotlights to be used to highlight signage and VM displays.
